Got a gym membership at a place called 24/7 which is open 24/7 ofc. Works good enough for me, at home I only got some normal weights of like 10kg. Oh also some set that is 28kg but that aint mine, I use it from time to time though when I cba.

For some reason we can keep fit without funny practise in gyms. Gyms just want your money anyway.
Unless you get to see some decent girls in the gyms, otherwise it's not worth the money.
Most ppl. have a bicycle or escape friday and saturday nights from police (lol), or take a long walk/run outside just to keep 'em fit, and thus save money.
Count me as a couch potato.., I don't need to spend my spare time in gyms. I don't even do any of the above I stated. Just swimming once in a month or two maybe.. then there's work. ;)
And even without the work, I'd keep fit 'nuff. Just wouldn't practise any muscles. Noticed how I had trouble 2 years ago with ~50Kg, now they're easy lifting.

why so much effort into that post? u have 2 remember that this is a forum and u CANNOT tell how someone's life is on this site. u could see million pics of me, happy or sad and you still wouldn't know what i'm like. Same for anything else. I love how you actually did an FBI check up on me, all of your statements are wrong, if you just said i was vain then your right. I might take a pic of my shoes next :) do i get a different response to its colour? i might have 2 think about which one to use. Roko gym in gillingham... its a state of the art gym, basically each member gets a code, and the code saves on all the machine, when you type that code into each machine you go on, it auto sets up all your weights. and judging by your regime, E.G fitness or weight loss etc, the weights get heavier etc.
really good gym, a bitch to pay tho, something like £50. a month. but im a student so its £28 for me.

Keep more than fit 'nuff with that. Landscape gardener, if you were gonna ask what I'm working as.
Soooo.. fuck paying for having a fit body. I get paid for it. :P
Also.. if I wouldn't do the job, there'd be no difference, only that I wouldn't be able to lift any more weighty-er stuff. I don't "grow" fat on my body, lol. No matter what I eat, no matter if I go out regulary etc.

i hear where your coming from XUnit. But it's still important :)
Vanity is a reason for it all. Tho it isn’t a great longterm motivator for most people. It wasn’t until I realised that exercise rewards beyond physical appearance and that I was able to get myself to the gym 5-6 times a week without any drawbacks.
The main reasons for anyone to workout are the following.
Testosterone
Clarity and Concentration
Enjoyment
Cleansing
Better Sleep
Longer Life
Stress Relief (Most important)
Superior Strength and Endurance :D
Self Confidence :)
XUnit

Nobody (including XUnit) appreciates what the gym is like and what it can do for you because you've probably never even tried it. Many people struggle lifting their own arses off the sofa, so they dont even give the gym a thought.

I don't need to appreciate how they can get off my money, tbh.
You can lift any weights at home, run your rounds in a park and be healthy/wealthy active from your home any day if you wish so. There's no fucking bull need to give a gym your fucking damn money.

see thats exactly what i do.
I've gone from 14 stone, to 12 and a quarterish by just simply running around the park, or just playing football more regularly. I don't need to pay money to get into shape lul.
You don't even need weights to build up your muscles.
Vanity is a reason for it all. Tho it isn’t a great longterm motivator for most people. It wasn’t until I realised that exercise rewards beyond physical appearance and that I was able to get myself to the gym 5-6 times a week without any drawbacks.

that most likely doesn't look very comfortable... It isn't! lol but our bodies adapt very fast, it becomes 2nd nature.
Mix that sort of stuff with just casual running and it's better. Not saying ppl HAVE to do weights, just saying it helps :)
XUnit
05-04-2009, 04:03 PM
But helps with what? It certainly trains your muscles, but that only serves for lifting more heavy weights, and then it starts again, as that keeps "training" your muscles more.
Anyway, stick with what I said and you'd save a lot ass money already. :p

Shit and old, doesn't matter, tbh. You get the practise done either way, eh?
Thing is I don't want to spend my hard earned money on such a useless hobby, don't think you can call that opinion stubborn. :)
unless you go into the world of UFC, profesional wrestling, boxing or what not, there'll never be any practical use for massive mucles.
Hense why i dont really bother building muscles, just tone them to keep them natural. Fitness is more important to me being as thats what'll keep my heart pumping longer and give me a healthier life.

Darbz loves his weightsssss.
The gym up the road from me is actually pretty good. It's not as big as most other gyms, but keep in mind it's owned by the University and has a good range of equipment. There's also a bigger gym at the University itself we have access to but I'm not too keen on that one. £55 a year pays for a good gym, unlimited access to tennis courts some all-weather pitches and other fields, some sort of sports doctor and a personal advisor should you want one. Plus various work-out thingies that happen twice a day (like aerobics and exercise and fitness routines that I've never tried). Best of all you can join the sports societies... I'm a member of fencing and Jiu Jitsu :p Might give tennis or something a try next year.
Pretty good for £55 imo. I don't think it's that cheap to members of the public tho.

I posted the 1,5 mio retards on purpose, no need to turn all red on me. lol
In other words it wasn't meant to be a serious comment at all. :P
If they feel they can spend the money on something like that, well go ahead. I don't feel the need for it.
You pay about €20 here monthly for a standard issue and set-up gym centre.
There are more exlusive ones around here of course, but not sure what the prices are over there.
Whatever I'd spend on either of these gyms, it would be lost money on 100% and even more that 100% of money loss, cause I could well do over-hours at work instead and earn money, instead of wasting them.
Just fair and logic reasons I have for not going to. It's a waste of money from a to z, a complete fail idea to have so many of them in the first place or any at all, when ppl. could go out and occupy parks.
Yarr, staying by this and you know it.
It does help if you make sense mr deutsch, but what im saying is because someone who isnt athletic (yourself) dosent approve of a clealry athletic place, there is no need to slag it off because you fail at it. Thats all.

Doesn't mean I can't get used to it, or so to say.. it doesn't mean I'm not already athletic. ;)
Also, help with what?
I can learn anything outside of a gym about anything that goes on in such a gym.
I could also then do anything without it. Train muscles, condition, self confidence as Recoil put it.. anything can be done outside or at home, without the need of the gym after all. I guess I wouldn't mind the price that Mf's paying however, if the rare case occures I get bored and get myself into a gym then for no other reason what so ever.

Right, I was taking this in a jokey mood beforehand, but I think it's time to just get stuff set straight. (Long post)
XUnit- you don't lift weights, fair enough. Have I said in any of my posts that a person MUST lift weights, and that they MUST go to a gym? Of course you can get fit and strong by other means, weight lifting is just another one, and for me it's a great personal hobby. When playing a team sport you have a lot of fun with your team mates, and you get that feeling of accomplishment whenever you win whatever tournament/ championship you're in. But you also get that same feeling with bodybuilding- seeing your squat go from half your bodyweight to twice it is something else entirely- just like you can't mimic that feeling when your rugby team wins the county tournament, you can't mimic the feeling of accomplishment you get with seeing your body change and being able to do more with it.
So like I said, it's a hobby. And you've pointed out it's an expensive one. That I can't deny- steel is expensive, and in the last couple of years the price of gym equipment has gone up ridiculously, but that doesn't change the said feeling you get when you work out. And besides, although it may cost a lot of money, weight lifting is possibly one of the safest, healthiest sports around. Granted, we all know about people who've been crushed under the bars or suffered horrific injuries from weight lifting, but if someone working out leaves their ego at home and learns correct form this can be avoided. There's no ifs and buts about it; someone who knows what they're doing whilst working out who doesn't let their ego get in the way has an incredibly low chance of actually getting hurt. In fact, working out is good for health. As well as making someone stronger and fitter, it actually strengthens the joints of the body, and obviously strength passed on from weight lifting has a great deal of use in all walks of life: endurance, strength, stamina and an edge on other athletes in sport- who wouldn't want this, simply because it would cost them a few paychecks?
This in mind, look at contact sports such as rugby- I've had four friends seriously injured in Rugby in the past few months, and all of them are incredible athletes. A couple of them even play county, and are all incredibly strong and fit. The injuries they got from it are as follows: broken collarbone, broken wrist (both bones), broken arm, dislocated shoulder (can't lift his arm above shoulder height for a year or he'll never be able to use it in contact sports/ heavy lifting) and the last one had his calf muscle pushed up his leg- he literally had a ball of muscle stuffed up just under his calf.
Now I'm not trying to downsize rugby, or the people who play it all. All of these guys are down to earth, have been playing this game for years and train with some of the best rugby players in my county. But they still managed, in the space of several months, to injure themselves worse than me or my brother, who have been lifting for quite a while.
So your posts about how much of a waste of time and money working out is are, in all honestly, bullshit. Remember that link I posted? The one to a forum of 1.5 million retards? (Trust me, it's more like 1.5 million ego maniacs !) If you honest to god believe what you've said, then go ahead and get an account on that website and post a thread asking people if they feel that weight lifting has really changed their lives, or if they would rather have done other stuff with their money. It'd be interesting to see you talking about working out to people who are actual dedicated weight lifters, rather than slagging it off to a group of people who, you included, don't know the first thing about it.

My mate dislocated his knee playing rugby, his kneecap ended up on the other side of his leg.
Also I live next to a football field and was awoken one saturday morning by a young lad screaming, so I look out my window and his leg had gone all Djibril Cisse. Very nasty for a 10 year old to go through.
So yeah I understand what Recoil is saying, but I will always prefer Team Sports (maybe thats because I've never had more than a sprained ankle).

Not saying ppl. must not go to gyms. Just saying it's horrible to spend such an ammount of money to lift weights and other work out stuff there.
Like Sharkgun says, I got a good job right now where I literally earn money and do all kinds of stuff I could do in such a gym. Did I say I earn money doing that?
And why is your post drifting off so badly, it goes to rugy sport injuries?
I mean it doesn't give any sort of common meaning to your argument, or to the points I made.
I wouldn't be any better if I'd waste my time with the so called 1.5 Mio retards on the forum over there.

That's not true just because Xunit works 8 hours a day don't mean it's more hard work than a intensive work out... don't get me wrong his job is very hard work and I know I wouldn't be able to do it but he has become used to it using the same muscles day in day out. So now he wouldn't be burning the fat or building the muscle like he used to when he started he would have levelled his fitness level out, where as an intensive work out is changes all the time i.e. more weights, longer running times so you keep pushing you're body to a new level of fitness.
Just because people go to the gym it don't mean you want to be some huge hench guy, people go to swim, jog, socialise or just in general have a healthily living lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look after your body and the shape of it, yes I do agree people have egos cause of their muscle but tbh who wouldn't want want to show it off in the summer etc if you and had some ripped body, if you put years of hard work into making your body look nice then you don't want to cover it all up do you?
XUnit
05-07-2009, 05:01 PM
Yeah, that's right. I'm not making my muscles that much "better" than they are now.
Although it does involve the whole body at most times given.
There's indeed nothing wrong with it to work for something like a good body, unless you don't want it. etc..
But I am still stuck with my point that it is useless to PAY for it, unless it's the ammount of what Mf pays for his gym.

It isn't just a weight machine or running machine you pay for. It's the swimming pool/jacosy, steam room, on top of that most gym do lessons like aerobics, boxing (not real boxing but the fitness side of it) and also free advice on how to improve what you’re doing and how to gain more benefit from it. I'm sure if you want to go swimming one day then it's a couple of quid and you will find kids screaming about unless you go at a quite time. I tend to find good gym's swimming pools nice and relaxing and you can get a good amount of swimming done without kids everywhere. I wouldn’t however pay loads to use a gym and I do see your point about it, but paying for a reasonable amount gym is worth it IF you are into this type of thing.

Chris, I aint that type who needs silence, lol. I don't mind kids screaming hours long in a swimming pool/hall.
I was never in a steam room either, not sure if I'm that type of person.. not even going to the "solarium" (where you get your skin more coloured..), that is also a waste of money, lol. Mainly cause I get sun tans all the time at work in summer.. well usually anyway..
off topic now.
It's good if the sun bombs on the place where you work, tho, cause it's like we're not exactly allowed to work too long in the sun, we want to prevail any problems in case you loose consession (?) from when it gets too hot, almost like in Spain, where they don't work around midday. hehe
Obv. also drink loads (at least 4litres then) and protect the skin.
Also, to come back to my first sentance.. when the weather gets warmer, women wear less, right?
Although it's getting stupid at some point. Not like they're naked, but tends to be like that in a few years to come.. lol

Recoil's bro hijacks the thread and gives out advice before his dumbass brother does
Creatine isn't a magical cure-all that will make you swole with no effort. As far as I understand its main purpose is to help muscles recover faster so that you can use them intensely in a shorter space of time (reduces muscle ache....I think)
Not worth forking out money for supplements if you haven't got your diet in check with calories and macros (% of calories coming from fats, carbs, protein) so take a step back and ask if you honestly think you eat enough for whatever goal you have in mind before paying for this. That said, if you do decide to buy something I strongly suggest
myprotein.co.uk
Whether you want to buy protein, creatine or other supplements this site is reliable and stocks fairly cheaply, but good quality stuff. Onto your main question.
If the push ups are too easy or you want variations try with your hands further or closer together, elbow positioning also makes a difference (try with the elbows tucked in by your sides and not flaring out, noticable difference) Also, the king of push ups is the handstand wall push up. Google it to see how to do it properly, very demanding so be careful when doing it.
Get rid of the sit ups; they've been proven to be bad for you. As you sit up your lower back rounds, grinding the lower vertebrates of your back against the floor. This, and several other things are a reason why sit ups are going 'out of fashion;' they're not safe. Don't take my word for it though, google it and see for yourself. I suggest reverse crunches/ hanging leg raises instead.
Keep doing chin ups (palms facing you) and pull ups (palms out) They're fantastic exercises that use your back and your arms as well, will really build upper body strength if you're consistent with them.
Also, I noticed you said 'chin up machine.' I assume you're using an assisting machine that takes some of your weight for you. Ditch that and start using the pull up bars that should be in the gym. If there aren't any you can place a barbell on the highest point in the rack and do pull ups there, or even buy a doorway chin up bar for domestic use for as little as £10. Don't use the machine, use your own strength to get up to that bar
As for benching and overhead pressing, don't keep them at those weights forever. Adding an extra couple of kilos everytime you lift will build strength over time. Hell, you throw in squats and deadlifts with them and do 5x5 each time and you'll build complete body strength.
Speaking of which, is there any reason you don't train your legs? Running is more of a heart-training form of exercise, and while your legs do get used running won't exactly give you ground shaking quads. Strongly suggest looking up squats if you don't know what they are and have a squat rack at your gym. Most of the power comes from your core, your legs and your back, so don't neglect training these.
Lastly, don't expect to get buff or ripped if you train 3x a week but don't bother to track your diet, or at least learn what's in what. Your body grows and changes due to what you eat, not how much you train. You lose weight/ gain muscle by eating, not lifting. Ask any experienced lifter and they'll tell you that transforming your body is 1/4 exercise, 3/4 diet (or something to that effect).
Hope this helps you mate.

your right bout the creatin, it helps water retention in the muscles so builds up mass quicker, it helps in that way which is why im getting some
unfortunately i have to do press ups as its part of army selection aswell as sit ups altho i do believe they've scrapped it for snatch grabs now, but even so i'll keep on doing them pure because they're the norm in the army.
cheers for the adivice bout the chin up machine, i thought it was far too easy so that shud deffo help me.
diets all in check, i eat 1 big meal a day and snack light on proteins and carbs for the energy.
i do train my legs, but only when i go to the gym on the leg press' etc etc, the running is just for stamina and cardio fitness. cheers for the advice mate should help alot.

No worries man, like I said it's just my advice so you can take it or leave it as you want. The best advice I can give is really to read up on stuff- you can learn so much about how the body responds to certain movements and such in half an hour of thorough reading, it's unreal!
No worries with doing the push ups though- they're a great movement to do. I'd assume that the sit ups have been taken out of the army test since, as I said, they can be damaging to your spine, but again, it's all on you what you choose to do.
As for legs I'd honestly recommend getting in the squat rack at your gym if it has one and squatting; no machines can compare to free weight exercises, and the squat is just incredible. Builds complete lower body power, strengthens your core and promotes flexibility and posture that carry over into all aspects of life.
Good luck mate.
